Film Synopsis

Talented but unproven stock car driver Cole Trickle gets a break and with the guidance of veteran Harry Hogge turns heads on the track. The young hotshot develops a rivalry with a fellow racer that threatens his career when the two smash their cars. But with the help of his doctor, Cole just might overcome his injuries– and his fear.

DAYS OF THUNDER was shot photochemically on 35 mm film using Panavision cameras and anamorphic lenses.  For its Ultra HD release, the original camera negative was scanned in 4K and graded for high dynamic range (both HDR10 and Dolby Vision options are available). Colors are surprisingly tame and providing deep inky blacks, with bright crisp whites.  The 2160p resolution brings every detail into sharp focus and showcases the race cars well.

Audio

The 4K release includes its primary audio in English 5.1 Dolby TrueHD format. Very odd as the other two simultaneous catalog releases featuring Atmos (Top Gun, War Of The Worlds). The racetrack scenes are especially well done as the viewer can hear the cars speeding by during the race.

Overall Reaction

If you're a fan of DAYS OF THUNDER you should be pleased with the new native 4K transfer with Dolby Vision and HDR10 - it looks fantastic! The Isolated Score Track is terrific, featuring Hans Zimmer’s compositions in 48kHz Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo. It’s not Tom Cruise’s best film but its overall very entertaining.
