Hollywood has depicted the Vietnam War with  such films as Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now. Oliver Stone’s Platoon. Michael Cimino’s The Deer Hunter. Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket.  We now get Spike Lee's DA 5 BLOODS. Lee's story shows us four black Vietnam veterans going back to their old battleground in a quest to locate and repatriate the remains of their commander (Chadwick Boseman), who was killed in combat.  The group consists of Paul (Delroy Lindo), Otis (Clarke Peters), Eddie (Norm Lewis) and Melvin (Isaiah Whitlock Jr.). They are joined by Paul’s estranged son David (Jonathan Majors), who forces himself to join the group in a bid to  reconnect with his father.  Spike Lee tells his compelling story about Vietnam and brotherhood that couldn’t feel more timely right now.  DA 5 BLOODS is a well-made film and features very powerful imagery throughout. Delroy Lindo stands out as the main lead and we could see his name during the award season.

Summary (out of 5)

The film opens and closes with montages about the State of America “then,” and the State of America “now.”  DA 5 BLOODS honours the Black Lives Matter movement.  This is a beautiful well made movie that is worth checking out and for sure I can see this film being in the 2020's Oscar contenders.
